A spokesperson for China's Ministry of Commerce stated on Thursday that no economic and trade negotiations have taken place between China and the United States, adding that any claims of progress in bilateral trade talks are unfounded and lack factual basis.

Spokesperson He Yadong made the remarks during a regular press briefing in response to related questions.

China remains open to consultations and dialogue, and its stance has been consistent. However, any form of discussion or negotiation must be conducted on the basis of mutual respect and equality.

"We Chinese are not troublemakers, but we will not back down when trouble comes. Intimidation, threats, and coercion are not the right way to engage with China," he said.

He noted that the trade war was unilaterally and recklessly provoked by the U.S., and China urges the U.S. to correct its wrongdoings. "If the U.S. truly wants to talk, it should demonstrate sincerity and return to the right track of equal dialogue and consultation, working together to promote stable, healthy, and sustainable development of China-U.S. economic and trade relations," he added.

He emphasized that the U.S. abuse of additional tariffs violates fundamental economic and market principles. "It has not only failed to resolve domestic issues in the U.S. but has also severely disrupted the international economic and trade order, interfering with normal business operations and people’s daily consumption."

He pointed out that such actions by the U.S. have drawn strong opposition from the international community and within the U.S. itself. "The one who tied the knot should untie it," he remarked.

He reiterated that the unilateral imposition of tariffs was initiated by the U.S. "If the U.S. genuinely wants to resolve this issue, it should heed the rational voices from the international community and within the U.S., remove all additional tariffs on China, and seek to resolve differences through equal dialogue."
